FAMILYFANS Books & Comics
by Andrea J. Buchanan & Miriam Peskowitz, with illustrations by Alexis Seabrook (Collins Publishing Group)
Reader Appeal: Girls of all ages; Moms & Daughters Genre: Activity Book
Want to learn how to dye your hair using Kool-Aid? Catch fish? Become the president of the United States? Everything a daring girl needs to know is included in this super-fun book! Following the success of their bestseller The Daring Book for Girls, authors Buchanan and Peskowitz have dreamed up more stuff for girls to learn about or learn how to do. Readers will find more traditional activities for girls such as slumber party games, hula-hoop helps, instructions for how to dance the waltz, and info on tying a sarong. They’ll also find great non-traditional activities such as how to make a rope ladder, dancing the Cotton-Eyed Joe, shooting pool, and how to run away and join the circus. Every girl (and even lots of boys) will find something intriguing in this book! The book includes a balanced mix of both activities to try (crafts, games, sports, dancing) and information every girl will want to know (notable women in the fields of math, science, dance, and the arts, how a magazine is run, what it takes to be a private eye, and info on the constellations). One of the funniest parts of the book is the section on how to run away and join the circus. Many paragraphs and illustrations demonstrate how to juggle and how to make and walk on stilts. The high wire and plate spinning are also covered. But when it comes to fire eating…you’ll only find three sentences! (OK, that’s because they don’t want girls actually doing it!) This is the perfect book to pick up before summer hits. When you hear “I’m bored,” pull this out and hand it to your daughter. She’ll find more to do than you imagined, and she might even get you involved in the fun! (And just to be sure you’re not wasting your money, the authors even titled one of the chapters, “What to Do When You’re Bored.”) FAMILYFANS RATING: A+ --AN Note: All book or comics-related graphics in this column are standard publicity/promotional shots and are owned by their respective publisher. |
