LOST IN THE SOUND OF SEPARATION

Underoath / Tooth & Nail Records / Solid State Records

Fan Appeal: Teens and young adults

Genre: Hardcore / Screamo

This newest installment from metal band, Underoath, is definitely a strong force with excellent musical talent and powerful lyrics.

Many of the songs on Lost in the Sound of Separation are reminiscent of songs like “Casting Such A Thin Shadow” on their previous effort Define The Great Line. This is a great thing because of the explosive power punch that they pack leaves the listener wanting more while the range of music evokes a range of emotions. For example, in “A Fault Line, A Fault Of Mine,” there is a slower part with more synthesizers and a chorus of voices that then explodes into a heavy riff with some pounding vocals. Another high point of this album is that almost every song has some spiritual message or meaning in it. This wasn’t as present in Define The Great Line, and it is good to hear uplifting lyrics in a genre that can so often be overrun with lyrics about murder or drugs. This is present on “Breathing In A New Mentality,” which is also one of the best tracks on the album. This song talks about starting a new life and having God clean us up and start us again and teaching us how to live. This is also an excellent first track, because it reels the listener in with some catchy guitar riffs and speedy drums.

The biggest downer on this album was that it didn’t seem to progress. If you look at Underoath’s previous works, each album has been a progression in musical ability and style. This album seems to be very similar to Define The Great Line, both in musicianship and in style. That’s not to say it sounds bad, but Lost In The Sound Of Separation seems more like an extension of their previous works rather than a whole new and fresh project.

Overall, though, this is an wonderful album that is definitely worth buying for hard music fans. I recommend Underoath especially if you are looking for an alternative to mainstream bands of similar style.
