DAY AND AGE

The Killers / Island Records

Fan Appeal: Teens and Young Adults

Genre: Alternative

This new installment from The Killers is a definite improvement from their previous flop, Sam’s Town, and is an album that your kids will probably keep stuck on repeat for hours on end.

Day and Age starts off well, with the song “Losing Touch.” This has a very smooth feel with some underlying synthesizers, and yet also gets "popped up" with some exciting guitar solos. This song is also one that all can relate to at one point or another: losing touch, and how we just end up looking for a way to connect to life again. Another ear-pleasing song is “A Dustland Fairytale.” This tune starts slower but then builds in intensity as the story works its way up. It's tells of a fairytale love that has been lost - and that idea of loss and absence in relationships is a theme that appears throughout the CD.

One of the most important parts of an album is the last song. It’s the last thing the listener will remember, and it can bring closure to an album. This one does not disappoint. The song “Goodnight, Travel Well” is a beautiful farewell with wandering drum beats, and fond memories of better times spent with the one who is leaving.

Unfortunately, there are a few parts of this album that do disappoint. One of these is “Human.” This song mostly just repeats the line “are we human or are we dancers?” over and over and over, and that becomes annoying and old quite quickly. Also, there are points when the collection of songs as a whole begin to sound repetitive. One of the worst things is that the vocals can get a little bit whiny and annoying a couple times randomly dispersed throughout.

In spite of those flaws, and that fact that it had no real spiritual depth lyrically, I still felt this CD was quite enjoyable, and well worth a purchase, especially if you are already a fan of The Killers.

FAMILYFANS RATING: B+
