This soundtrack to the award-winning movie, Slumdog Millionaire, is excellent in its boundary-crossing style and upbeat rhythms.

From the get go, this CD decides to pick up the pace and turn up the heat with the song “O…Saya.” This melody seems to set the tone for the rest of the album, with a middle-eastern sound combined with hip-hop flair. Very interesting and enjoyable.

Another high point on the album is “Mausam & Escape.” This instrumental song is an near-genius fusion of style. The main instrument sounds something like a Spanish guitar, but it is backed by a thriving techno beat. One other song that is really good is “Latika’s Theme.” This one is very calm and smooth. There is a wandering vocal melody and some airy synthesizers and guitars in the background that all seem to swirl together like smoke.

Unfortunately, not all of the songs are superb. There are two songs by the artist, M.I.A., and those are both sub par. First, they are both the same song, just two different versions, so there’s nothing really great or surprising. Second, the lyrics are pretty nonsensical and repetitive. It gets old quick.

The only other thing that was a slight downer was that since the basis of the music is from another culture, the lyrics were almost always in another language, so there was no telling what was being said. Still, overall this was a very enjoyable album...minus the M.I.A. songs.
