The
Katinas / Gotee Records If the
hype is true, the sophomore album from R&B/pop siblings, The Katinas, is so
significant that it’s “their Jesus Freak” (referring to the
chart-topping, supergroup-making CD from dc Talk). Unfortunately that kind of
talk is premature. Yes, Roots is a solid, enjoyable disc from obviously
talented and popular musicians. No, it’s not a disc that will define a
generation musically. On the
positive side, nobody does as well what The Katinas do best. Songs like “Are
You Ready” and “Movin’” showcase their ability to fuse intricate
harmonies with get-up-and-dance, intensely enjoyable melodies. Also, the
bittersweet ballad, “Someday” is genuinely moving and inspirational. Still,
The Katinas don’t seem to stretching their songwriting skills and artistry
beyond what’s already been done (see Plus One, True Vibe, or any other “boy
band” for examples). And settling for trite lyrics like “I’ll keep on
movin’/No time for losin’” and “Ooh La La La” seems a cop-out for guys
with their caliber of talent. Still,
we must remember that it took dc Talk four albums before they delivered Jesus
Freak, and perhaps it’s too soon to expect The Katinas to do something
similar in only two. So take Roots for what it is—fan-friendly R&B
pop with a solid Christian focus—and recommend it with confidence to Katinas
fans in your home. —Mike
