Lay It Down

Jennifer Knapp / Gotee Records

With her 1999 Dove award for New Artist of the Year firmly in hand, Jennifer Knapp is back with her second album, Lay It Down. And in case you were worried, there doesn’t seem to be a sophomore slump in store for this acclaimed alternative artist. Blending her folk-rock style with poetic lyrical intensity, Knapp presents a thoughtful (though sometimes mellow) CD that won’t disappoint.

“A Little More” starts off the album and shows exactly what this young artist is capable of doing. Beginning with a quiet musical prayer, it steadily crescendos into a full-throated plea for holiness from the Holy One of all, finishing with an orchestral hum that makes you want to listen to it again just in case you missed something.

“Into You” is also ear-catching, with a harsher guitar sound layered over a slightly country vocal delivery. Bringing in a bit of a James-Taylor feel is “All Consuming Fire.” This one is possibly the most worshipful—and happiest—melody on the album. Other memorable moments are “When Nothing Satisfies” and “Peace.”

Lay It Down is a strong sophomore effort from an artist on the rise. If you enjoy quality folk-rock sounds, you’re going to be quite happy with this new CD from Jennifer Knapp.

FAMILYFANS RATING: B+
