HIGH FLIGHT SOCIETY

High Flight Society / RKT

Fan Appeal: Teens and Up

Genre: Rock

The self-titled debut album from High Flight Society really surprised me! It's a good rock-n-roll disk, but it also has some great Christian lyrics and messages that make you think.

"Sweet Redeemer” is a real highlight on this album. This song has a good melody, and some neat lyrics. This song tells a story of how the singer has messed up, and needs God’s forgiveness. The chorus states this: “I only want to stand up, move on, stand up and know, I’m redeemed.” Powerful.

The first cut on this CD, “Time Is Running Out (Where To Start),” was the tune that surprised me most though. Not because it sounded so much better than I expected, but because it sounded so much different than I expected. I had seen the band’s picture before listening to the album, and from what I saw, I expected another punk rock band that sounded the same as all of the others and sang about the same stuff. Not that punk is bad, but there have been very few punk bands to try to step out of the box and do something new lately. So “Time Is Running Out (Where To Start)” really shattered my views of this band since that song was so much more mature in music and in lyrics than I had expected. Once again proving that you can’t judge a book by its cover.

One more melody that stood out to me was “Learn To Let Go" - a song is about letting go of everything and hanging on to God’s word and promises, trusting Him to do what he says he will do.

There is one main downfall to this album. There are several songs that sound similar to each other, both in vocals and in music. For example, “Loss For Words” and “Time Is Running Out (Where To Start)” both sound similar. The music for both is mostly driven, but does have some breaks in them. The guitar lines also sound somewhat the same. “Escaping” and “Declaration” also are reminiscent of each other. They are both slower on the verses with some pretty guitar stuff under the vocals, and then they get bigger on the chorus, but are still withdrawn a little from full blown rock and roll.

In spite of that, High Flight Society is one of the better albums that I have heard by a new artist in the past few months. Most new bands have just disappointed me. But in High Flight Society there is a lot of potential, and a wonderful Christian message in a solid, rock package.
