Ginny Owens / Rocketown
Records The music of Ginny Owens
always seems to provide more than simply melodies and beats, and Something
More is no exception. Demonstrating a lyrical depth that’s both
refreshing and confounding, Owens’ pop music offerings are a complex work that
will appeal to many and may confuse the rest. “With Me,” though
occasionally gimmicky with sound effects, delivers a simple-yet-profound
reminder of God’s perseverance that’s reminiscent of Cindy Morgan.
“Something More” brings to mind Owens’ labelmate, Chris Rice, as it
explores the meaning behind the frenetic motions we apply to this life. Other
special moments are the quiet reflection of “This Road” and the
Sixpence-None-the-Richer style melody, “The Hand.” Something
More also reveals a new stretching by the
young artist, and shows Owens beginning to experiment more musically.
Often that’s good; occasionally it comes across as simple mimicry of
other musicians. Still, it’s good to see the artist growing, and portends well
of things to come. In all, Something
More is another solid effort from last year’s Best New Artist Dove
Award winner. Is it the best she can do? Not yet. But it’s still good enough
to keep us happy until then. --Mike Nappa ### |
