Geoff
Moore / ForeFront After
more than a decade as the front man for The Distance, award-winning singer,
Geoff Moore, has finally stepped out on his own with a self-titled solo album
from ForeFront Records. The results are quite satisfying. Making
the most of his trademark-rough vocals, Moore quickly grabs your attention with
the gently-rocking song, “Through It,” (co-written with Steven Curtis
Chapman). This determined melody uses a throbbing acoustic background to bring
home the need for perseverance in the face of trials.
The acoustic prayer, “String Around Your Finger,” is also enjoyable. Lyrically,
there’s a new depth to Moore’s music that’s refreshing and
thought-provoking at the same time—particularly songs like the softly
worshipful “Belong” (also
co-written with SC2 ), and the gritty slice-of-life tune, “My Own
Backyard.” Cuts like these sprinkled throughout the album only become more
meaningful after second, third (and more) spins on the CD player. In all,
Geoff Moore’s talent and experience combine to make this self-titled CD one of
the better albums of 1999. Expect it to be well-received by GenXers and Baby
Boomers alike. —Mike
