Colloca / One Voice Records If your
family enjoys the songwriting style of Scott Krippayne and the Latin rhythms of
artists like Jaci Velasquez or Ricky Martin, then the latest English-language
release from Freddie Colloca should receive Unconditional acceptance in
your home. Like his
2001 debut, Unconditional includes an ear-pleasing dose of cayenne pepper
for the soul. Melodies like the horn-heavy prayer, “Unconditional Love,” and
the praise-filled, fiesta-flavored treat, “ Song of My Heart,” are wonderful
examples of this. However,
with this CD, Colloca seems intent on stretching beyond the confines of “Latin
star” and into the ranks of “Pop star with a Latin influence.” The result
is a bevy of pure pop-radio tunes that don’t draw on Colloca’s heritage to
communicate the message of Christ. Highlights among these primarily
vanilla-flavored songs are the balladic, “Just When I Needed You Most” and
the energetic ZOEgirl knockoff, “Savior My Savior.” In all, Unconditional
is a pleasant mix of pop music that fans of Christian radio should
enjoy—whether they’re allowed to hear Colloca on the airwaves or not. —Mike
