This is an excellent CD which sports great songs and has a good Christian grounding. Right from the get-go with the opening song Serenity I could tell that this album was going to be a great one. With the screaming, distorted guitars and the soft, beautiful voice of lead singer Dawn Richardson, making a great combination for an amazing sound that almost no band is able to imitate. That kind of musical creativity was an immediate attention-grabber for me as I listened to this album. Lyrically, Fireflight is just as interesting, investing poetry, spirituality, and storytelling into their songs. For instance, “Star Of the Show” tells about God and how He is the only real “star” of our lives—and how, no matter what, He still loves us. “Liar” is a song about people who put on a show of being a great Christians but, on the inside, they are just faking it and hurting themselves and others in the process. As good as this group’s debut is, no album is perfect. There are a couple possible drawbacks about this CD for some listeners. One is that I have met people who think that it is not a good combination when there are girl singers who front harder rock bands like this one. I can see their point, but I still enjoy it and liked the combination here. Also some listeners don’t like screaming as a melody line, and there are a couple of the songs on which brief screaming parts are featured. And, as is often the case in a rigidly defined genre like hard rock, the album also has potential to sound a lot the same because some of the melodies are similar to each other, and several of the guitar licks seem repetitive as well. Overall, though, I felt this is a superb debut CD that I would recommend to anyone who is looking for a new rock band to listen to. FAMILYFANS RATING: B+If members of your family like this CD, then you may want to try… -Flyleaf: Flyleaf (self-titled). Rock. This is a great harder rock album with a girl singer and it is full of amazing songs. --Tony Nappa ### |
