The Echoing Green / Red
Hill Records I always love a good
surprise—which explains why I’m so high on the latest album from the
up-and-coming young band, The Echoing Green. Truth be told, I didn’t expect
much when I first let this one spin in my CD player. Of course, by the middle of
the second song I realized I’d let my opinion of the band’s name lead me to
grossly underestimated its music! With a unique blend of
electronic pop and modern rock, The Echoing Green has made a seriously
creative—and ear-pleasing—album in Supernova.
Highlights here are easy to find, starting with the pulse-pounding rhythm of the
title track that proclaims the power of God’s touch in a life. The
techno-balladry of “Waterfall” is also a treat, using hypnotic keyboard
effects to deliver lyrics that describe the cleansing freedom of God’s
forgiveness. “She’s Gone Tragic” is another song you don’t want to miss.
With a darker, sadder feel, this is a sobering story of a young woman’s
inability to overcome depression that honestly illustrates how we’ve all felt
at one time or another. In all, Supernova
is something special—an intelligent, creative approach to Christian music
that’s too often lacking in most CCM albums. Highly recommended. --Mike Nappa ### |
