FamilyFans Music### The
Company The
Company / BEC Recordings Hey,
disco’s not dead—it’s just been feeling a little under the weather lately,
and its latest shot in the arm is the self-titled debut from The Company.
Although some will be tempted to view The Company as simply a novelty band, rest
assured this group deserves better than that. Combining
phat bass grooves of yesteryear with recent years’ techno-pop expertise and
the praise power of today’s modern worship, this band has created a
unique—and enjoyable—new sound. “Boogie Machine” is irresistible, with
popping bass strings and fun lyrics that point to God. “International” is
also entertaining, sporting a rowdy, Kool and the Gang musical style in a call
to spread love around the world. Other memorable moments are the Donna Summer-esque,
“I’ll Sing a Song for You” and the bluesy/funky “In the Mix.” The only
real weakness in The Company is that the band’s vocals haven’t quite reached
a Donna Summer-like standard—yet. Still, there’s much to like about this CD.
Don’t be surprised if The Company becomes a preferred stock among your
family’s 15- to 35-year-old disco fans. —Mike
