Beggar's ParadiseBeggar’s Paradise

Chris Rodriguez / Word Records

What can you say that’s bad about Chris Rodriguez? Well, his hair’s kinda poofy, but judging from the artistry of his long-awaited debut album, Beggar’s Paradise, that’s as far as you’ll get on the negative side of this singer/songwriter. Blazing a bright trail in the world of edgy pop (and guided by lauded producer, Brent Bourgeois), Rodriguez has created a gem of an album.

For all its power pop offerings, the most captivating cut on this album is the lullaby-like “Magdalena.” Lyrically meeting Mary Magdalene outside Jesus’ tomb, this song is made all the more arresting by the rough vulnerability of Rodriguez’ vocals and the Cindy Morgan-esque string quartet.

For the pure pop lover, Rodriguez has much to offer. The title song is a rollicking anthem of forgiveness reminiscent of John Elefante or Scott Krippayne. “This Time Around” is a hooky, radio-friendly tune with just a hint of a Beatles influence. In “Mercy Day,” and “Turn Around” that influence is exposed—with delightful results. Other memorable moments on this CD are “Saved” and “Walk You to the Sun.”

In all, I can’t say enough good things about Beggar’s Paradise. Recommend it highly to fans of guitar-driven pop with a lyrically strong message.
