Carolyn
Arends / Reunion Records If
you’ve ever wondered what Wes King might sound like as a woman,
the answer is on Carolyn Arends satisfying new CD, This Much I
Understand. Mixing pop sensibilities and impressive guitar-playing skills,
Arends latest is a great driving companion—especially if your motoring down
the freeway in a ’67 convertible. There are
too many high spots on the album to mention them all here, but my favorites are
“Happy,” “Surprised by Joy,” and “Even the Wallflowers.”. Using an
energetic little drum beat along with nifty string work, “Happy”
announces defiantly “I’ve got Jesus…I will dare to be happy!”
Demonstrating her versatility, Arends leans on a piano accompaniment to testify
about God’s grace in “Surprised by Joy.” And the ode to new motherhood,
“Even the Wallflowers,” uses a variety of creative musical accents that
accompany nicely the sentimental lyrics. In her home country of
Canada, Arends keep hitting the mainstream top 10 charts The reason why is
evident on This Much I Understand. A great mix of artistry and real-life faith,
don’t be afraid to take this Canadian import home to stay. --Mike Nappa ### |
