beanbag
/ inpop records The
rap-core revolution of mainstream acts like Limp Bizkit, Kid Rock, and Korn has
finally hit home for Christians in free
signal—the debut release from Australian group, beanbag, and their
brand-new record label, inpop. In
addition to their aversion to capital letters, both beanbag
and inpop seem averse to settling for
the status quo in the music they make. Though
the songs here are sometimes mindlessly repetitive, “whiplash” is a good
example of what beanbag can do. Amp-squealing guitars are the motor for this
mosh-pit masterpiece that uses staccato, frenetic rap vocals to proclaim,
“Jesus will never let you go!” From there it’s more of the same, with
highlights including the screaming rap vocals of “obliviant” and the nonstop
assault on the senses of “why?” A
throwback to the days of Hendrix and early metal bands, free
signal is also a progressive new brand of hard alternative music for
today’s teens. Encourage your teens to use this CD as a way to connect with
disconnected youth in your community, and also as a positive Christian
alternative for mainstream acts with the same style. —Mike
