Among Thorns

Among Thorns / Here to Him Music/SirReal Records

There’s good news for fans of artists like Caedmon’s Call and Jars of Clay, and it’s called Among Thorns. Brandishing a smooth, folk-rock style, this self-titled debut is sure to turn heads—toward heaven, that is. That’s because every track on this stellar album is a praise song, every word intent on worshiping God. Although that doesn’t always lend itself to radio formats, it works beautifully for this CD.

Having honed their craft through years of leading worship for large youth gatherings, it’s no surprise Among Thorns’ music is readily accessible from track one to the end. Still, the real gem on this album is the softly acoustic, “Embrace This Place.” Fronted by unusually intimate vocals from Jason Harrison and minus any cluttered background arrangements, this arresting melody is worth the album’s sticker price all by itself. Other high points on the CD are the driving pop/rock praise song, “Shelter Me,” and the edgily worshipful, “Holy Anointed One.”

Overall this is a well-produced worship experience for America’s younger generation. Confidently recommend it as such.
