Alvaro Lopez / One Voice
Records) One of the freshest albums
in Christian music this spring has come from south of the border—Mexico City,
to be exact. That’s where drummer/vocalist Alvaro Lopez calls home, and where
he honed his considerable talent for making Latin-flavored R&B music. His
first English language release, The
Alvaro Lopez Project, is simply brimming
with hook-heavy, ear-catching music. The first track here,
“Life is Short” gives a tantalizing taste of what Lopez can do, with blazing
horns, thumping bass lines, and energetic vocals reminiscent of Michael McDonald
or Tim Miner. “Live Without Your Love” simply continues the trend by
lighting a fire of radio-friendly R&B behind a passionate lyrical prayer.
Other highlights include the silky “Jesus I Want to Live,” the sweet love
ballad “She’s Beautiful,” the jazzy instrumentals “Smooth Jam” and
“Jazz Jam,” and the readily-accessible, Spanish language pop song, “Por Tu
Amor.” In short, this is easily
one of the best releases of 2001 thus far. So don’t miss this it! --Mike Nappa ### |
