Reader Appeal: College students and high school seniors Genre: Advice
Student to Student is a very helpful book about many aspects of college life. It was written by college students for college students. This book is a guide to college life written by over 50 college students. In Student to Student, the reader will discover how to deal with living in the dorms, new roommates, finding time for God, and all the freedoms that come from living on a college campus. It contains personal stories interspersed with scripture and other advice, such as what to bring to college and how to avoid the “Freshman 15.” This book is especially helpful for me since I am preparing to go away to college in the fall, and has taught me several new things that will hopefully help me as I spend my time away from home. The greatest thing about all of these short stories is that they come from firsthand experience. These aren’t older people writing about college years afterward, these are stories that are being lived out by the authors right now. The little filler bits between chapters are fun and include tips like how to make professors like you, or random facts like the top 10 movies brought to college, or the top 10 dorm foods. It’s also nice that every chapter is followed by several scripture verses for the week, and is started by a scripture to back up the lesson being taught. The biggest weakness of this book was that the stories were sometimes just a little bit too short. Several times I found myself wanting to know the ending to a story, not just the spiritual message behind the story. The other main disappointment was that only a couple of the stories were really entertaining. All of them were informative and helpful, but I was hoping for a few more laughs—after all, I always hear that college is some of the best times of your life. I highly recommend this book to college students and high schoolers on their way to college. It will be like a helpful little guidebook to the new world of college.
