FOOL'S GOLD (PG-13)

Plot Summary: A divorced couple seeks sunken treasure in the Caribbean with the help of a wealthy man and his tabloid daughter, while trying to escape from the evil rapper “Bigg Bunny” and his thugs.

Reason for the Rating: Action violence, some sexual material, brief nudity and language.

In 1715, the Spanish ship Aurealia sunk to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, taking with it the fabled “Queen’s Dowry,” a treasure of emeralds and rubies and gold with no equal.

In 2008, a divorced couple, Benjamin "Finn" Finnegan (played by Matthew McConaughey) and Tess Finnegan (Kate Hudson), discover the secret of the location of the Queen’s Dowry and decide to go after it. They first fell in love while plumbing the mystery of the Queen’s Dowry, and now it has pushed them back together again in one last quest to find the treasure. Happily, they spark the interest of a benevolent old rich man, Nigel, who has a fabulous yacht at his disposal (which is just perfect for treasure hunting). Finn’s charm and golden abs also spark the interest of Nigel’s tabloid queen daughter, Gemma.

Together on their quest for gold, the four experience all kinds of warm fuzzy epiphanies, such as Gemma realizing she doesn’t have to act like a bimbo to get attention, Nigel realizing he should take his daughter more seriously, and, of course, Finn and Tess realizing just how much they love each other. Awww…

Of course, treasure hunting can never be that simple, and rapper and underground empire builder “Bigg Bunny” stands in their way. That’s right, Bigg Bunny…a rapper so fierce, his manhood isn’t threatened by the gold bunny medallion he wears around his neck, nor the fluffy bunny he strokes in his lap.

That right there should tell you a lot about this movie. It’s silly. It’s not great art. Its plot is predictable and improbable. It doesn’t take itself too seriously—and you probably shouldn’t take it too seriously either. It’s not a terrible way to spend a cloudy Saturday afternoon. But it’s not a great way either.

This movie is about what you’d expect…A couple laughs, a little intrigue, a lot of Matthew McConaughey's abs. Nudity, innuendo, and language aside, it’s just OK. It’s not as good as National Treasure 2—and that’s saying something

MOVIEBLOG RECOMMENDS:

This film is easily missed, so unless you're a fan of Matthew McConaughey's abs, let this one pass you by.

AFTER THE SHOW

Is there a loved one in your life who is the adventurous one, but is not always conventional? (Or are you this person?) Do you admire this about the person? Why or why not?

Does this unconventional attitude of adventure ever cause complications and frustrations? Explain.

How can we learn to value the types of people our loved ones are (adventurous or conventional) and perceive the good in the way God created them?
